Getting ready for school

Starting school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs transition days to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.

Getting ready for kindergarten

Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone for both children and families. To help your child have a smooth and happy start to school, here are some important steps you can take before their first day:

  • Visit the school and attend orientation sessions to help your child become familiar with the environment.
  • Encourage your child to practice daily routines like dressing, eating, and using the toilet independently.
  • Talk positively about school and what they can expect, to build excitement and confidence.
  • Read books and engage in activities that support early learning and social skills.
  • Complete all enrolment forms and provide necessary health information on time.
  • Connect with teachers and other families to become part of the school community during the information and transiton to school sessions.
  • Access available support programs to assist your child’s learning and wellbeing.

Getting ready at home

You can help your child get ready by encouraging independence and routines.

Talk about school
Positive conversations about the school, teacher and how exciting it is to start school.
Using the bathroom
Teach proper hygiene practices like washing hands, how to use the bathroom correctly. Provide spare underwear and a change of pants for your child if needed.
School bag responsibility
Teach your child how to manage their school bag before they start school. Ensure they can manage the zippers and organise their school bag with their lunchbox and drink bottle. Practise independence and taking ownership of their belongings.
Label everything
Take your time to label items before school starts. Children's belongings should be clearly labelled to prevent loss and confusion.
Uniforms and self care

Practise dressing independently. Ensure your child can manage tasks like zippers, buttons and tie shoe laces.

Have conversations about the importance of taking care of their belongings and putting everything in their school bag.
